Talk:Kerepesi Cemetery
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sorry Guys, Kerepes Cemetery is not an appropriate translation for Kerepesi temető. You're right that in Hungarian usually -i refers to the location, e.g. Budapesti kórházak means 'hospitals in Budapest', szegedi székesegyház means 'Szeged cathedral'.
But in this case -i refers to the neighbouring road called Kerepesi út (= 'Road Kerepesi' or 'Road to Kerepes'), Kerepes is a village in the surroundings of Budapest. Kerepesi temető is a shortened version of the original Kerepesi úti temető (when the cemetery was opened in the mid-19th century, the Road Fiumei didn't existed yet). If the cemetery was in the village of Kerepes, then the English translation would be fine as Kerepes Cemetery, but in this case: Kerepesi Cemetery.
