This article makes it sound like his defeat to Duran was solely because of the suspected low blow (fwiw some say it was a knee, not a punch that got him in the groin). It would be fair to note that Duran had dominated the fight, barring a knockout (unlikely given the level of Duran at the time) Duran was ahead on points and would've won the fight easily. He knocked Buchanan down in the first round. Some speculate that Buchanan exagerrated the severity of the blow in an attempt to save his title.
