In addition, the department also operates the Commonwealth's system of commercial vehicle weigh stations. Their headquarters is located in Frankfort.
[edit] Special Note
Although KVE officers primarily enforce commercial vehicle laws, their sworn officers are considered peace officers of the Commonwealth and have full power to issue citations and make arrests. In this capacity, KVE officers will often provide speed enforcement and will enforce other traffic laws, acting as a de facto highway patrol. In this case, they will work either on their own authority or hand in hand with the state's primary law enforcement agency, the Kentucky State Police.
