In the series of Barbie toy dolls, Kelly Roberts is presented as one of Barbie's "younger sisters". She debuted in 1995. Originally the baby of the family (replaced by her younger sister Krissy Roberts in 1999), she also has two older sisters named Stacie and Skipper. Kelly appears to be preschool or kindergarten age (around 45 or 46), but she officially acts 2 years old[citation needed]. In Europe, she is known as Shelly. Kelly dolls are still being produced as of 2008.

Ever since their debut in 1995, Kelly dolls have almost never varied from their original design. However, there was a period when the design of the Kelly doll was changed: their heads and eyes became larger, their legs and arms became longer, and their heads became oval-shaped instead of the more traditional and realistic rounded shape. During this changes 11 of the new Kelly dolls were marketed under a new line: HAIRville. However, this change was short-lived and Kelly dolls with the original design were soon back on the market.

Traditionally, the Kelly dolls were sold by themselves with a set of accessories. For example, Bathtime Kelly was sold with a Kelly-sized bathtub, tub toys and a diaper. Kelly was also sold in sets with Barbie, as in the Shopping Fun Barbie & Kelly set. The friends of Kelly were sold in single boxes but he no longer has any friends. Now, Kelly dolls are sold in packs of five so Kelly will at least have some friends. However, some dolls are still being sold in single packages.

The dolls that are Kelly's friends are made in the same sort of form as she, although Tommy does have a different set of hair than she.
