[edit] Background

KCFM is not owned by any of the existing radio groups, but by a local consortium.

One of the non-executive directors and shareholders is radio consultant Paul Chantler, the project manager is Ben Gray and Chief Executive is Ian Blakey. Tim Jibson is the Programme Director and has previously presented for both KCFM's main rivals Viking FM and BBC Radio Humberside.

[edit] Launch

The station carried out a full month of test transmissions before launching at 6 a.m. on 1 August 2007. The first voice heard on air was that of Steve Jordan who then introduced Programme Director Tim Jibson. The station was then officially lauched by Chairman Ian Blakey, he spoke about his love of radio and then played the first song which was "Twist and Shout" by The Beatles.

[edit] Branding

KCFM's launch jingles are resings of a KVIL package produced by radio ident company Jones TM in the U.S.A [1]. A custom made news jingle has also be commissioned, this can be heard before the news every hour.

[edit] Sport

Sport is a major part of the programming. Sports commentators David Doyle-Davidson and Alex Burgess (previously with BBC Radio Humberside) are among the sports teams broadcasting live uninterrupted commentaries of Hull Kingston Rovers, Hull FC and Hull City matches. Hull City coverage is hosted by Alex Burgess while Dave Hudson presents coverage of the city's two Super League clubs.

[edit] News

KCFM delivers local news 24 hours a day, this is achieved by having a KCFM newsreader during the day and Independent Radio News at night, this is then followed by the presenter of the programme on air reading the local update.

Their news team consists of Wesley Mallin, Rachel Cook, Darren Harper and James Clark.

[edit] Technical

[edit] Transmission

The station broadcasts on 99.8 MHz FM. Its transmission area covers the city of Hull and the neighbouring towns of Beverley, Driffield and Goole from a transmitter mast on top of the Humber Bridge's north pier.

[edit] Studios

A purpose built studio complex has been constructed at "Planet House" on Hedon Road in the east of the City. Studio Design has being carried out by Bob Corn of Corn Tarrant Partnership [3] - Technical Installation by Radio Studio Services [4] - which is headed up by Richard Lawley.

[edit] Controversy

During the station's last RSL trail broadcast as "KC107.3", local newspaper the Hull Daily Mail complained to industry regulator OFCOM claiming that news bulletins were lifted from them without their permission [5]. A war of words soon developed between the paper and KC Stadium chairman Adam Pearson [6], this culminated in the mail publishing a front page entitled "The Facts" which went into further details in a substantial spread within the paper[7].
