Katrineholm is a city (pop. 22,500) in Södermanland, Sweden and the seat of Katrineholm Municipality, Södermanland County.
The name Katrineholm comes from a ducal residence with this name, after Catherina Gyllenhorn who lived there. The settlement started growing when it became a railway junction connecting the railways Stockholm - Gothenburg), and Stockholm - Malmö. In 1917 it had a population of 6,000 and is the 1971 the seat of Katrineholm Municipality.
[edit] Today
Katrineholm used to have a strong industrial sector, with a handful of multinational corporations contributing to its economy (e.g. Ericsson, Scania, etc.), but in the 1990s some of these companies significantly reduced their workforce in Katrineholm. Rail transport to and from Katrineholm have been significantly reduced in just the last few years. Fokus Magazine 2007 notes that Katrineholm ranks 270 [1] out about 290 Swedish towns. Nowadays there are a lot of residents of Katrineholm that do work somewhere else particularly in Stockholm as the train connection between Katrineholm and other major cities is quick and comfortable.
During the 1970s and 1980s the town bandy team was one of the best in the Swedish national league. The Federation of International Bandy has an office in Katrineholm. Today we can see that bandy is on the edge, bq of internal fights in both clubs. (KSK & Värmbol)
