Kate Stark (Meredith Baxter) is married to a successful lawyer and has a daughter, but suffers from bulimia. Opening scenes show her "binging and purging" by placing large orders from a pizzeria, a fast food joint, and an ice cream shop by pretending to yell to her daughter, who is not actually with her, to justify the large orders. Her husband slowly learns about of her secret and commits her to rehabilitation.
