Talk:Karpathos
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a permanent resident of Karpathos I strongly dispute that the number of permanent residents is 6000, which is the number of people registered as residents. About 3000 live most of the year away from the island. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.75.19.34 (talk • contribs) 18:11, 14 November 2006.
- I think 3000 permanent residents (6000 minus 3000) is too small of a number. The number of registered residents, if I recall correctly, is over 7000. While it is true that many Karpathians live on the island during the summer months only, there are also a lot of people that only leave for short periods of time (2-3 winter months) and others that actually come back to Karpathos from the USA after the summer months. I think the best source of information would be the political offices of the two candidates from the recent local elections. They would know exactly who lives on the island and who doesn't...
[edit] Area of the island
The area of the island as currently given, 324.8 km², is merely an addition of the municipal areas of the Municipality of Karpathos with the Community of Olympos. Olympos also includes the Saria Island as well as other tiny uninhabited islands. I don't have a breakdown of these areas, so I cannot give a precise figure for the island of Karpathos by itself. [edit] Suggestions to improve this article
This article is shaping up nicely but there are still more things to be included. I'd just like to brainstorm a bit and suggest a few things that can be done:
1.) More information about the villages. Maybe one section per village. Include pictures, discussion of culture, traditions and anything else that is unique to each village
2.) More history details.
3.) Discussion of the local economy, its dependence on tourism and expatriate investments, as well as what Karpathos produces and exports (if anything).
4.) A bigger map of the island, with major locations marked
5.) Pictures and descriptions of the most popular beaches
6.) Maybe a small description of how Karpathians in USA, Athens, Rhodes and other places in the world still keep in touch and try to hold on to their traditions.
7.) General Karpathian culture (not village specific). For example, the unique matriarchal structure of society.
