Karl-Hermann Knoblauch (1820-04-11 – 1895-06-30) was a prominent German physicist. He was one of the six founding members of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft at Berlin on 14 January 1845. All six were independent-minded students of Heinrich Gustav Magnus.
He studied the magnetic properties of crystals and the oscillatory nature of infrared, receiving his PhD in 1847.
At Marburg, he worked with John Tyndall from 1850 while earning his o.Prof. Tyndall's talk on this work given in 1853 at the Royal Institution attracted Michael Faraday's ongoing interest. Tyndall and Knoblauch maintained a correspondence over the next 25 years.[1]
In 1853 he was called to University of Halle, where he taught through the winter semester of 1895. He was the Rector of the University three times from 1868 to 1871. From 1878 to 1895 he was the 15th President of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina returning it to Halle, where it remains today.[2].
