kaneton is a microkernel project which aims at providing a very clear, extensible and powerful design.

kaneton does not intend to become a Unix-like operating system. In fact, The kaneton project has two objectives:

  1. The kaneton educational project consists in providing everything necessary to understand how an operating system kernel works. Therefore, the kaneton microkernel was designed and implemented in a way that allows students to very quickly understand how things work.
  2. The kaneton research project which aims at building a powerful, reliable and secure microkernel. The kayou distributed operating system is being developed on top of the kaneton microkernel as kaneton provides features for managing distribution and security.
