Kampos Avias

Kampos (Greek:Κάμπος) is the capital of municipality of Avia, in messenian Mani, in prefecture of Messenia in Southern Greece.Kampos has 350 inhabitants. It is located at height of 350m, on the provincial road Kalamata-Areopoli, 22km. away from Kalamata. In Kampos, there is a primary school and a junior high school. In the village there is the byzantine church of St. Theodor which houses many famous murals. Also, there is the small church of St. John with murals of thirteenth century. Above the village there is Zarnata's castle. In the village there is the traditional tower-house of Koumoundouros family in which Alexandros Koumoundouros(the first prime Minister of Greece after the Turkish occupation) was born. Near this tower-house there is the arched mycenean tomb of Machaon, son of Asclepius.
