Kamei Korenori

Kamei Korenori (亀井茲矩? 1557 - February 27, 1612) was a retainer under the Amago clan of Izumo Province, during the late Sengoku period of Feudal Japan. As Korenori's father-in-law, Kamei Hidetsuna, was unfortunately killed in battle against the Mori at a prior time, Korenori was unfit to succeed the clan of Kamei according to the present circumstances: It was essentially above all else for the Amago to reattain their power and domain, which had been recently robbed by the powerful Mori Motonari. And as a result, Korenori joined together with his brother-in-law, Yamanaka Shikanosuke in 1566--to whom he was related by virtue of marrying the younger sister of the former's wife--to revive the fallen fortunes of the Amago and destroy Motonari and his ambitions. As an unfortunate resolution to such admirable conviction, however, the remaining potential heir--Amago Katsuhisa--committed suicide in 1578 due to Oda Nobunaga's lack of consideration towards their cause, and Korenari's brother-in-law additionally met death -- justifiably, through being murdered. With his resolve now crushed and the cause of Amago destroyed, Korenori sided with a man, that same year, that was sympathetic to his former cause: Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Receiving Shikano castle of Inaba province as a reward for his notable service following the year of 1578, Korenori ascended to higher rank as he assisted Hideyoshi in the latter's Kyushu Campaign of 1587. Being presently interested in foreign trade and desiring to obtain the coastal domains of Izumo province--which possessed high quality harbors--as a mutually beneficial means for his past service against Mori and the clans that resided in Kyushu, he was unable to receive such a demand: jurisdiction and control over Izumo had already been given to the Mori as a part of Hideyoshi's truce arrangements. Following with the suggestion of being granted the Ryukyu Islands instead, Hideyoshi laughably bestowed upon Korenori nothing more than a paper fan inscribed with the words "Lord of Ryukyu". Korenori was thus unable to wield any actual claim or control over the islands, as a result to such, and thus willingly followed by serving under Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Sekigahara Campaign in 1600, at which his income was risen from 13,000 to 43,000 as a reward for his mutual service towards the Tokugawa. Korenori's feats during the Edo Period remains unknown, and he would die of natural causes in the year 1612.

Korenori's descendants were eventually moved to the Tsuwano Domain, which they ruled until the Meiji Restoration.
