Kamacuras (カマキラス Kamakirasu?), is a fictional gigantic praying mantis that has appeared in the Toho produced Godzilla series.
[edit] Showa series
On Sogell Island, a mantis the size of an adult human lived. Later, a horrible radioactive accident that occurred due to a weather experiment mutated the insects into even larger proportions. The creatures, now the size of a building became known as Kamacuras. Three Kamacuras found an egg and cracked it open to find a small, infant reptilian creature. As the huge insects prepared to close in and kill the helpless creature, Godzilla himself arrived on the scene and attacked. Godzilla slew two of the Kamacuras and the last Kamacuras was slain by the gargantuan spider, Kumonga. However, one retreated to Monster Island where it has lived ever since.
[edit] Millennium series
In the 2004 film, Godzilla: Final Wars, Kamacuras made an appearance as one of the many controlled monsters of a race of superior extraterrestrial beings known as the Xilians. It attacks Paris, France and is teleported away by an enormous UFO to make it seem as if the Xilians eliminated every kaiju. Eventually, it is discovered that the Xilians were controlling the monster, who are returned to finish their rampages. When Godzilla begins to battle the monsters, he fights Kamacuras in Japan and wins by throwing the creature onto an electrical power conductor. There is also something special about Kamacuras in this movie, because it can blend in with the surrounding environment like a chameleon does. One odd thing about Kamacuras is that he appeared green instead of the original red. Also, it can fly faster than the original versions.

| Trivia sections are discouraged under Wikipedia guidelines. The article could be improved by integrating relevant items and removing inappropriate ones. |
- Kamakiri (螳螂 かまきり) is Japanese for Praying Mantis.
- The English dub of Son of Godzilla names the Kamacuras as "Gimantis", an obvious portmanteau of "giant" and "mantis". In all future dubs in which it appears, the creature is referred to by its original name.
- The Deadly Mantis features a mantis that is about the same size as Kamacuras.
- The Playstation 2 video game War of the Monsters features a mutant praying mantis named "Preytor".
