I grew up on the coastal plain of North Carolina, from which I escaped to attend the University of North Carolina. After graduating from UNC, I moved on to graduate school at the University of Illinois. Nevertheless, I still consider myself an adamant Tar Heel. At Illinois, I've taught courses in poetry, science fiction, and composition. Currently, I'm living in Chicago while I finish my dissertation.
When I'm not writing about Joseph Conrad, H. G. Wells, and other fin de siecle writers, I enjoy listening to hip hop, especially left-field and alternative hip hop, including Gnarls Barkley, Madlib, MF Doom, and el-p. I also enjoy reading graphic novels, New Weird and other slipstream fiction. Recently, I've been making my way through the entire work of China Mieville and M. John Harrison.
I contribute mostly during the summer, but I monitor a few important articles throughout the year.
