June 3: 1621 – The Dutch West India Company received a charter for a trade monopoly in the West Indies by the Dutch Republic. 1888 – American writer Ernest Thayer's baseball poem "Casey at the Bat" was first published in the San Francisco Examiner. 1937 – Months after he abdicated the British throne, Edward, The Duke of Windsor married American socialite Wallis Simpson (pictured) in a private ceremony near Tours, France, a wedding opposed by the Church of England because Simpson was a divorcée with a living ex-spouse. 1992 – The High Court of Australia delivered its decision in the landmark case Mabo v Queensland, recognising the land rights of the Aborigines. 2006 – Montenegro declared its independence, ending the union of Serbia and Montenegro. I can find no reference Charles de Gaulle becoming Prime Minister on June 3 1944 (excepting copies of this Wikipedia article). It seems rather unlikely, three days before D-day and with the Vichy government still effectively in power. There is a reference to him becoming Prime Minister designate on June 1 1958 [1] (he may have been confirmed a few days later). If anyone has genuine references for this it would be good to see them; otherwise it's a little embarrassing to have something wrong on our front page. DJ Clayworth 19:45, 3 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] National Doughnut Day

The US "holiday" of national doughnut day is actually celebrated as the first Friday in June. In 2005, that was June 3. In 2006, it is June 2.
