[edit] Spike Jonze

If you read the article about Juliana Hatfield losing her virginity to Spike Jonze as referenced in the article, it's pretty clear she's having a bit of a sly laugh- especially given Jonze's association with Dig magazine. Whilst Hatfield's virginity has been a big part of her career, it's probably wrong to put this under trivia when its clearly a pretty sarcastic comeback at those who categorise her as a singer who's not 'done it', for want of a more erudite expression! --The globetrotter 22:48, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Juliana Hatfield is typically a very private person and rarely volunteers details about her personal life. Thus, the Dig magazine article purportedly by Hatfield seems very strange and I wonder if it may be some sort of "April Fool's" gag (which is not unheard of for local weeklies). In any case, is it normal to say who someone lost their virginity to in an encyclopedia article--whether the person be an entertainer, politician, novelist, scientist, or whatever? It seems a bit odd and rude. What do others think about this? Badagnani 22:53, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
To add another perspective to it, i've just checked the entry for Tom Jones who is reasonably known for his affairs with, amongst others, a former Miss World. He's not gone on record (to my knowledge) about his extra-marital dalliances, and is still married. There's a fair bit of comment on his lovechild, and also his relationship with Elvira, who has spoken about their affair, which does set some precedence for inclusion there. I guess my point is that Tom Jones is equally a private person who also volunteers little information concerning his private life, and there's talk of his lovelife on his page; equally, talk of Hatfield's virginity is reasonable due to the dig article and her statements in it. I think as a direct quote, the Spike Jonze line needs to stay in, but probably needs a qualifier- what we need is for someone with a bunch of clippings to find a 'I really don't understand the interest in my virginity' quote from Hatfield that would both place and explain the preoccupation with her sex life!
To me, the quote isn't a gag, but a throwaway line- as if, if she was on the Letterman Show and Dave asked her about losing her virginity to Evan Dando, she would have said 'yes but of course I really lost my big V to you Dave!'.--The globetrotter 23:18, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Please stop deleting the section that you don't like. I've provided many comparative examples for the inclusion of Hatfield's statement- and provided a qualifying statement in the article to provide a balanced viewpoint. This needs to stay in the article as it's something Hatfield herself said. She did not sue, nor put out a press statement retracting her words. Hell, associating herself with someone as celebrated as Jonze as her career stalls is one of the few positive things she's done in years! If anything, Jonze should sue! --The globetrotter 12:54, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

She didn't "say" it, she apparently "emailed" it. I'll say it again: free weeklies, entertaining as they are, have been known to make things up in the past (without informing their readers), and an email isn't very verifiable unless the weekly checked out the veracity of the email by contacting Hatfield. Badagnani 13:05, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Unless you have some sort of insider knowledge that explains that 'Dig' made up a very unlikely article that Hatfield for some reason decided not to legally persue, it's reasonable to consider that she did 'say' that she lost her virginity to Spike Jonze. There's no evidence to the contrary, and your supposition that 'it's probably not true' isn't really reason enough to delete this information from the article. People are frequently quoted in print, do they really say everything that's attributed to them? Where do we draw the line before we accept that they probably said something? DO we need 'on the spot' evidence to be able to say that Brad Pitt has said he is going to star in 'Oceans 13' before the studio announces it? And if we try and delete any unsubstantiated claims about a singer's lovelife, well, that's the entire Courtney Love article gone for a start! But I can't really be bothered with a revert war- the moot point is not worth we two legitimate wiki contributors arguing IMO. As long as we can keep this 'discussion' thread intact, anyone interested in Hatfield having poked the director of a few Fatboy Slim videos can do the research themselves :) --The globetrotter 22:54, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

The fact that the Dig article relied on an email is telling. Juliana is a well-known technophobe who is unlikely to be emailing anything to anyone. A similar prank email to the Boston Globe in the summer of 2006, which the paper ran with, announced her impending marriage. --—Preceding unsigned comment added by Fussbudget (talk • contribs)

Well, she has said that she likes cars.com (she bought a car from them a few years ago)...  : ) Badagnani 11:53, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
you really don't have a clue how newspapers and reporting work do you? 'apparently' some newspapers said Princess Di died, but I don't believe it cos my mom said they tell lies --The globetrotter 00:08, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
????????? Badagnani 00:09, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
BTW how has hatfield ever been able to afford a car? you lie! --The globetrotter 00:11, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
With all due respect, I don't think you know much. She's always had various cars, including one she wrote a song about. Know which one? I guess not. Badagnani 00:14, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
duh, "I've got Spike Jonze' hot rod between my pale fey legs" wasn't that the lyric? I happen to know she borrowed an '83 Yugo for six months when she was 27 cos she couldnt afford a car, actually. 'Various cars'? does she run a chauffeur service? or just do parking? Are you Juliana? --The globetrotter 00:19, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
That doesn't make any sense because she'd just released her biggest album ever at that point, on a major label (wide airplay, music videos, appearances on many TV shows) and was flying all over the place. This undermines everything else you've said here earlier (that is, when we are able to figure out what you are trying to say). Badagnani 00:24, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Do you know how PRS works? Plus it's pretty well known that she never recouped her advance thru sales. Plus she never flew, she e-joyed the banjo strings- that make enough sense for you? --The globetrotter 00:34, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
What language is that? Hillbilly? Badagnani 01:06, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

This "bio" looks like it was written by a 15 year old girl. And by judging the "discussion" (honestly I've seen more interesting debate on youtube for pete's sake), it looks as if everybody involved with this bio is unqualified to summarize their own life much less an established artist. Now go off to your little jhmessageboard and argue about who loves Juliana more. Roopsmith 02:53, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Need photo that actually shows this artist's face. Badagnani 18:27, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rumors and rumours

A lot of excellent work done on the article over the last couple of days, however I'm not completely sure about this:

"Rumors are already buzzing around www.julianahatfield.com's message board about Hatfield's next album. One rumor is that The Psychedelic Furs vocalist Richard Butler will make an appearance. Another rumor is that Andy Chase of the band Ivy will be producing the record to give Hatfield a fresh sound."

Does Wikipedia report rumours? I thought everything had to be verifiable and from a reputable source; I'm not convinced Juliana's message board qualifies, unfortunately.

--Merlinme 08:50, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Well, at least it got me to log into that board after over a year...(couldn't remember my password at first). You're right, rumors aren't usually kosher to include. Does she have a new album coming out? I thought she just did one with that band "Frank something." Badagnani 09:12, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I see--the 2007 thing is an EP, not a full album. Badagnani 10:43, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Both of these confirm Andy Chase as producer, Richard Butler guest vocals, etc:

Stratosphere Sound - on main news page, also mentioned under producers/engineers sections for Andy Chase and Ruddy Cullers

Stratosphere Sound Blog - May 17 and January 15 entries

Interview w/ additional confirmation there is a new album coming:

[edit] Style and Influences

Her enthusiasm for the music of the pop group Wilson Phillips apparently led, at least in part, to the breakup of the Blake Babies [1].

Removed. Recognize sarcasm people! Jesus H. Christ! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.65.240.90 (talk) 18:53, August 23, 2007 (UTC)

The cited quote does not appear to have been made in sarcasm. Badagnani 18:56, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

It doesn't appear to be made in sarcasm? A band broke up because of a song not being played on a tour bus? I guess you're one of those who believes everything they read. It's not laughable, it's wikipedia. It's people such as yourself that have no ability to fish through such things as sarcasm or bias to identify some semblance of truth or factual accuracy that is making wikipedia a laughing stock as an educational or researching resource. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.65.240.90 (talk) 05:35, August 26, 2007 (UTC)

That's funny, because just above, don't you see how I disputed the legitimacy of a purported letter to the editor in which Hatfield is supposed to have made a ridiculous statement? Badagnani 05:39, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

That letter actually was legitimate, though perhaps not all of it was meant to be taken seriously... this bit about Wilson Phillips definitely looks like nothing more than a silly little joke made in some random interview about her 10 favorite songs. Andrewk 77 06:14, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
