[edit] Summary
Front cover dustjacket art for the 1987 Mitchell Beazley hardback updated reissue. Image found on eBay, slightly cropped.
Copyright held by the publisher or the artist. The creator of this digital version is irrelevant as the copyright in all equivalent images is still held by the same party.
[edit] Non-free/fair use media rationale for The Joy of Sex
- Selected as a much more informative identifying illustration of the book than the rather bland current cover previously uploaded. This cover shows the 1970s style of the original Chris Foss illustrations, as discussed in the article text, featuring the infamous Joy of Sex "bearded man".
Although this image is subject to copyright, its use here is covered by US fair use laws because:
- The image is only being used in the article about the book (The Joy of Sex) for informational and educational purposes.
- It was used as the cover image for the book in the UK for a long time, by a notable artist, and became iconic.
- Use of the book cover visually identifies the book and its author in a manner that mere prose cannot, and meets all criteria in WP:NFCC.
- This image enhances the article in which it's displayed, as it provides an immediate relevance to the reader more capably than the textual description alone.
- The image is not replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted image of comparable educational value.
- The image is a primary means of visual identification of the article topic.
- The image is a low resolution image of the book cover, in an inferior graphics format (JPEG).
- The image is only a small portion of the commercially sold product (ie the book).
- The use of this image will not affect the value of the original artwork.
- The use of this image will not limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute or make a profit from the original. In particular, copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the book.
[edit] Licensing
This image is of a book cover, and the copyright for it is most likely owned either by the artist who created the cover or the publisher of the book. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of book covers
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Other use of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information. |
