José María Merino

José María Merino is a Spanish novelist born in la Coruna, Galicia on March 5, 1941. He is the father of two daughters, María and Ana, both of them university professors. (Ana Merino is also a poet.) He lived for several years in Leon and currently lives in Madrid. Best known for his novels and short stories, he is also a poet and a travel writer.

Notable works include these novels:

  • Novela de Andrés Choz (1976, won Premio Novelas y Cuentos)
  • Las cróicas mestizas
  • La orilla oscura (1985, won Premio de la Critica)
  • El centro del aire (1991)
  • Las visiones de Lucrecia (1996)

And three collections of short stories:

  • Cuentos del reino secreto (1982)
  • El viajero perdido (1990)
  • Cuentos del Barrio del Refugio (1994)

None of his major works have been published in English at this time.
