José Hermano Saraiva
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
José Hermano Saraiva (born in Leiria, 3 October 1919), is a Portuguese historian and jurist.
He was a professor of law and company management. He was Minister of Education of Portugal between 1968 and 1970 and ambassador to Brazil between 1972 and 1974. He lectured in the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Política Ultramarina of the Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and in private teaching institutes.
He is famous, not only in Portugal, but also among Portuguese communities around the world, on account of his television programs on the History of Portugal.
Hermano Saraiva is a member of the Lisbon Sciences Academy, Portuguese Academy of History and São Paulo Historical Institute in Brazil.
He was distinguished with the Grã-Cruz da Instrução Pública, the Grã-Cruz do Barão do Rio Branco, the Grã-Cruz do Mérito do Trabalho and the Real Ordem da Conceição de Vila Viçosa.
He is a controversial figure, not only because of his actions as Minister of Education of the Estado Novo, as well as his vision of history considered by some sectors of the academic community as too fantasist. His critics point that, even though Saraiva dedicates himself to the study of history, he has no degree in that area superior to the Licentiate. His supporters point his qualities as a television communicator and of spreader of the History of Portugal to the least instructed people in the country and to the Portuguese communities outside Portugal.
He is the son of José Saraiva, erudite and well known professor. He is the brother of António José Saraiva (a known investigator in the area of Literature) and uncle of José António Saraiva (journalist and Architect).
