Jorge M. Perez (born 1950 in Argentina) is a billionaire Cuban American real estate developer.
Perez, was born in Argentina of Cuban parents and lived in Colombia before moving to Miami in 1968. Known as the "Donald Trump of the Tropics", Perez owns 50 condo towers in various stages of completion in South Florida, Fort Myers and Las Vegas. His company, the Related Group of Florida, had $2.1 billion in revenue in 2004. He is an active Democratic fund raiser; he advised Bill Clinton on Cuba during his presidency and is an active fundraiser for the presidential campaign of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. In 2006, Forbes Magazine estimated his net worth at 1.8 billion dollars.
Jorge Perez's main company is called the related group. On November 18 2007 the related group demolished the Sherton at Bal Harbour to make way for a new project Video(http://video.ap.org/v/Default.aspx?partner=en-ap&g=b8f18169-e120-45a0-a6ed-60565bb4f058&f=FLMIH&f=flmih) . The Sherton at Bal Harbour was originally called the Americana which created by famous architect Morris Lapidus (who also did Fontainebleau Hotel,and Eden Rock Hotel). These buildings were so important and famous that they started the MIMO (MIami MOdern) style of architecture.
The related group has also started to build condos next to the historic Vizcaya estate in miami. This hotel will mar the skyline and be a big blight. It is very controversial as people feel it will degrade the historic Vizcaya hotel.
