Fort Sumter was a defensive building at the harbor in Charlestown. After the revolutionary war another fort called Fort Moultrie was built after the revolutionary war because the first Fort Moultrie fell apart. But sadly a hurricane it destroyed the second Fort Moultrie. So the Americans made a third Fort Moultrie in the same place with the same plans it was made in 1811. So after it was built the U.S. army wanted to build another fort besides Fort Moultrie. So in 1827 to 1828 the army made the plans for the new fort. So in 1829 men started to work on the new fort in 1829 by building a small island with some stone bricks they brought in by ship. With this new “island” made they made five-sided brick with walls five feet thick and fifty feet high. On four of the walls there were places for guns to be fired from. The only used 15 of the 135 planed for the fort. The fort was two stories high and had five sides. This fort was made to watch over the major shipping dock where many goods are ship importing and exporting goods. They also made this fort livable so if soldiers needed to stay there for long amounts of time they had food stanched there and beds for them to sleep on and running water. Major Anderson told the government to make the army at Charlestown Harbor larger for he feared that it would be attacked. But his General always wasted his time for they always said "Be prudent; be kind; do nothing to excite the South Carolinians. “It will not do to send you reinforcements, for that might bring on hostilities." The battle happened the day after President Lincoln was made President May 5,1861. Lincoln got word from a messenger that Robert Anderson (The Confederate General) was holding Fort Sumter in Charlestown with less than six weeks of food left. For four months Robert Anderson prepared Fort Sumter for battle. In the spring of 1861 the Confederate government messengers went by boat to Fort Sumter to speak to Major Anderson. They wanted him to surrender and he said no. Next day early in the morning they asked him again to surrender and when he said no they started shooting at Fort Sumter On April 12, 1861. These were the shots that started the Civil War. The battle was raging for 36 hours but surprisingly enough some were injured but none were killed on ether sides. So Fort Sumter did a good job at keeping the people in it safe. After 36 long grueling hours of battle Major Anderson finally surrenders. But after doing this one of his own men killed another one of his men and injured 5 more. At losing the battle was a giant lose for the union because more states started to join the confederates. These states were Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee. They were called the boarder states because they were the boarder between the North and the South. Most of the people of Virginia didn’t want to join the confederates, so they made there own state called West Virginia. Some other boarder states were aloud to keep slavery. These states are Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware. President Jefferson had no choice if he denied them to have slaves he would have lost those states. Those states in war were key to winning it for the union. The reason for the soldiers being in the fort was to protect it as long as they could. The reason for this was that this was the fort to watch over the Charlestown harbor so that trade could run peacefully. There was only one problem, the soldiers were running extremely low on food. “after sailing high in the air, came down… and buried themselves in the… ground, their explosion shook the fort like an earthquake.” The union started the attack but by the next morning the union was running out of ammunition so they decided to give the fort to the confederates. The civil war was the bloodiest battle that the United States of America have ever seen and it all started with the battle of Fort Sumter, a gigantic 1.1 million people were wounded or killed. The only good thing in this war was that 4 million slaves were freed from there masters. One of the many reasons that the civil war started was because many southerners were afraid of them taking jobs from the white people.
