John was born in the area of Bamber Bridge and Walton-le-dale in Preston. He played for a junior team in Walton-Le-Dale until he was scouted by Preston North End where he only lasted a short while until he decided to move to Blackburn Youth Academy. Where he played and soon as his 16th birthday arrived he signed professionally in 2006. He is strong at the back and can play anywhere across the back line[citation needed]. He broke through to the reserve squad at the end of 2006/2007 season where he got 4 appereances and he is looking to go further with his progress by playing more reserve games.
He has had a cartilage problem this season and it he has had lack of games because of this but he has just now returned to the side and his recent strong performances has meant he has got back in Glyn Hodge's reserve side.
He won tv's Soccer AM skill's skool challenge were he played one of his blackburn rover's youth team mate, Jake Simpson in a contest of football skills.
