Jonah Natural Gas Field
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jonah Natural Gas Field is located in the Green River Basin of Western Wyoming. About 30 miles south of Pinedale, Wyoming, and 65 Miles north of Rock Springs, Wyoming. It is accessed by taking U.S. Highway 191 from either Pinedale or Rock Springs, And minimally from US 189 and Wyo 351 which connects US 191 and US 189. US 191 is often referred to the "Jonah 500" due to the fact that even though mostly the speed limit is 65 MPH, all the traffic exceeds this limit. In fact, In the small Farson/Eden Rural community, a local cafe has started selling shirts with "I drove the Jonah 500" on them. Most mornings there is almost a sold string of headlights headed northbound on US 191.
The Jonah field sits between the Green, New Fork, and Big Sandy Rivers. All of which are drainages out of the majestic Wind River Mountains to the North East. Even though most development is largely hidden behind the sagebrush covered hills, often drilling rigs can be seen from the highway, which is a main route to the tourist areas of Jackson Hole and Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. The Jonah Field is also a habitat for many animals including the Sage Grouse (or as local refer to them, Sage Chickens) and Pronghorn Antelope.
Due to a large donation to the University of Wyoming, which prompted a makeover of the playing field at War Memorial Stadium, the field itself was also named the Jonah Field in honor of it larger cousin. It is now Jonah Field, at War Memorial Stadium.
