The "Jonas-Reindl", a two-storey tram station opened in 1961 next to the University of Vienna's main building. Since the opening of the U2 underground line in 1980 it has also had a direct link to Vienna's underground system. The "Jonas-Reindl" is colloquially named after the former Mayor of Vienna, Franz Jonas, while its official name is Schottentor ("Scots' Gate"), after the Benedictine monks who came from Scotland (via Regensburg) to Vienna in 1155. This is the site of the former city walls, where an entrance led directly to their monastery (which today is colloquially referred to as Schottenstift).
