[edit] The REAL John Proctor

I've spent years researching the Proctor family and John Proctor as he is my grandfather, many generations back. I have update the article with much of this information so we have a more accurate picture of him than that which is pictured in Arthur Miller's play. sharriso..... 25 May 2006

This page seems to present the fictional version of John Proctor created in "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. If I remember correctly, John Proctor was actually quite old by the time of the Trials, so the story about an affair is extremely unlikely, besides the fact that there is no evidence for it.

Andrew Davis

"John Proctor was nearly 32 years old when the Salem Witch Trials began." This is obviously false. If you look at his birth date it's pretty obvious. Would anybody with more knowledge on the subject please clarify on a lot of his involvement and other aspects. Straightxedger (talk) 19:37, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Response to Andrew Davis' post

Quite what I was thinking (not really). Also, the article should specify at the beginning that it's going to focus on the fictional John Proctor. Or better yet--the article should be corrected so that it talks about John Proctor and not his portray in Miller's play, how about that? --Plavalagunanbanshee 22:02, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Another response...

Although I didn't really add much information about the real John Proctor, I did manage to organize the existing information into new sections, so maybe the information already present actually seems more significant. Because the fictional and real John Proctor actually go hand-in-hand, separate articles shouldn't really be created on both. How much information is there about the real Proctor anyway? Might as well keep Wikipedia clean and leave both Proctors in the same article. By the way, if my pedophile comment within the article seems inappropriate, please remove it, I won't be offended (not to mention I don't have much of a say in this anyway, this is Wikipedia).

[edit] Not Really "External" Links

None of the links are really external, so I'm just changing the name of the section to "See Also".

[edit] The Crucible

In the play, Proctor is in his thirties and Abigail Williams is 17 years old. The real John Proctor and Abigail Williams were respectively about sixty and eleven years old at the time of the witch trials. Most likely their ages were altered in the play to make the fictional affair between them more believable[obvious]. Miller probably created the affair to add to the drama of the play. Also, as a result of the affair, Abigail accused Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft in the play. In reality, the Proctors' servant, Mary Warren, was the one who accused her.

In the introduction to the play Miller notes that he sometimes conflated several characters into one for dramatic purposes. He seems to have done this with Abigail Williams and Mary Warren—in the play, Williams worked for the Proctors as a servant and was dismissed because of the affair. Worth noting in the article?

I don't have a copy of the play to hand to get the exact quote, otherwise I'd do it myself. —WebDrake 18:18, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm trying to lay out the family relationships as described in the section as a family tree. For help with formating this extremely intricate template, see Template:Familytree.
