[edit] Add a Link?
Does anyone think we should add the following link to the John Deere Page? [http://earlyhistory.googlepages.com/historyofjohndeere History of John Deere] - Please explain your reasoning as to why or why not. Thanks! West wikipedia
- Because it does not cite it's sources, doesn't add anything already in Wikipedia, the site is non-notable i.e. it hasn't been cited as an authority by other reliable sources and it's authors are completely unknown. In fact if I google for earlyhistory googlepages com I get nothing. Please read WP:WEB (under criteria), WP:RS (e.g. Non-scholarly sources) and WP:NOTABLE and ideally please solve this one link first before you start posting to all the other entries you've been trying to make. [edit] Suggestion
should separate John Deere the person from the corporation --Rj 03:17, Mar 21, 2004 (UTC)
yo
- They are 2 seperate articles - John Deere & Deere & Company

[edit] Deere & Company history
Would anyone complain if I started adding captioned photos of older Deere equipment? Tsaman 05:47, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- I think it would be preferable to add them to the Deere & Company page. On the other hand, very early equipment made by Deere himself would certainly belong here. Zubdub 04:47, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
u should seriously make a different page about john deere to help people doing research papers on him
[edit] Sarah Yates Deere
I think we should really start a seperate article for Sarah Yates Deere, rather than having her on the John Deere article. What do you guys think? Eric 03:33, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of her being notable for anything other than being John Deere's spouse. I don't think she (or any of his family) necessarily needs their own section here. People are likely just pulling the info from the bios on the company web site. Just include an external link to there for people that want to read about his family. Zubdub 04:57, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- So pull the information from Sarah Yates off of the John Deere article and just place a link to her bio on Deere.com?Eric 17:35, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think the separate section should go. She certainly warrants mention since she is JD's spouse (and raised his kids, etc, so he could do all that great stuff), but once it gets into a separate history of her, I think that doesn't belong here. If you wanted to start a separate article on her, that's fine with me. Be aware, though, that you might have someone come along and drop a "not notable" tag on the article (some people here seem to exist only to do such things). I know of one user that likes to stick speedy-delete tags on articles, apparently without any discussion whatsoever. Zubdub 00:00, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- Someone smack me for confusing JD's wife with his mom! I also like how the article is right now. Zubdub 09:35, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

One paragraph on a person's family is hardly clutter, and certainly not enough to go splitting off into a separate article, so I've added appropriate merge notices. The way this talk section reads, one would think there had been a lengthy discourse on her in this article, but if so, it never made it into the separate article. A person's family is certainly important enough to warrant at least one paragraph about them in the article. Caerwine Caer’s whines 23:08, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- This is a Wikipedia article about John Deere NOT a Wikipedia article about John Deere & His Family. She is, although, important enough to be mentioned. That is why we have a Wiki link on the John Deere article to Sarah Deere. Eric 23:24, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
- I'd agree if there were anything noteworthy enough about her for an article of her own, but there isn't. Nor does she appear to warrant a link from any other Wikipedia article, in which case she might warrant an article to serve as the bridge between the two notable topics. Everything that appears to be notable about her is solely because her influence is leading him towards what he later became notable for. As such, a brief one paragraph mention of her and her influence on him is all that is warranted in an encyclopædia. Furthermore because her influence was notable on the course of John Deere's life, a simple link with no explanatory text is not adequate. Caerwine Caer’s whines 01:25, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- I've added back the pertinent details of Sarah's life that affected John's. Except for the trivia of who Sarah's father was, there's nothing left in the Sarah article that isn't also mentioned here now. Caerwine Caer’s whines 02:00, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- What you did on the John Deere article looks very nice! What we didn't want to have was 2 separate sections about Sarah Deere in the John Deere article. Here where you merged the information all into one article with just the one section looks great. I will go and remove the article about Sarah Deere now. Next time something like this happens please make sure that you explain your intentions of what you plan on doing fully. Eric 02:17, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Formatting?
Is anyone going to format this page? I have a few I wanted to do beforehand, and works kind of in the way, so if anyone wants to step up, that'd be awesome. TJohnson 03:09, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Requested move

The result of the proposal was no consensus to move, particularly since this is a merge suggestion. Dekimasuよ! 23:46, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
John Deere should be put in the same place as the corperation because he is the one that started the company.==12 May 2007==
- Oppose. This doesn't qualify for a requested move. If you wanted to merge the articles, then debate that, but RM is not the correct procedure here. But I'd also oppose a merge - this article is plenty long enough and notable enough to justify its existence. Cheers, DWaterson 00:26, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose the move too. If anything, move this to John Deere (inventor) or whatnot, and redirect to Deere & Company from here. Neier 00:21, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose and put a for the tractor company at the top of the article. Mangoe 16:03, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Recent edit by me
I removed the no refs template, there were some, and I added one, along with some information. The references show up as foot notes now with the addition of {{reflist}}. I also semi-wikified the article by adding some sections and a header template to disambiguate the article from Deere & Company. I went ahead and moved the header link to John Deere Tractor to a see also section and added John Deere House and Shop which I am working on currently. Incidentally I move John Deere Tractor to John Deere tractor to conform with naming conventions on the wiki. Happy editing and/or trails. IvoShandor 13:19, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Civil war
The statement added about Deere fighting in the Civil War needs a source, a good source please. See WP:RS (reliable sources page). I have reverted it for now but will happily add it back if a source can be provided here. IvoShandor 02:33, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Refs
If anyone wants to assist me, this article needs additional referencing and a careful reading to ensure no subtle vandalism has slipped through. IvoShandor 09:49, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Who did he Marry
I don't think he married Hannah Montana nor left his "husband" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.176.172.186 (talk) 02:10, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
