John Somerset Pakington, 1st Baron Hampton, GCB (20 February 1799 – 9 April 1880), was an English politician.

[edit] Early Life
Born John Somerset Russell [1] , son of William Russell and Elizabeth Pakington, who came from a prominent Worcestershire family; he was educated at Eton [2] then Oriel College, Oxford.
[edit] Political career
Before becoming a Conservative member of parliament for Droitwich in 1837. Was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in Derby's 1852 government; [3] and First Lord of the Admiralty in Derby's 1858 and 1866 governments [4] . In 1867 Pakington moved back to the War Office, and continued to serve in that office under Benjamin Disraeli.

Was created a baronet in 1846 [5] and Baron Hampton of Hamptom Lovett in 1874 .
President of The Royal Statistical Society 1861–1863 and Chief Civil Service Commissioner from 1875 until his death.

Married three times, initially on 14 August 1822, to Mary (née Slaney) daughter of Moreton Aglionby Slaney until her death [6] and had one son. [7]
Secondly, on 2 June 1844, to Augusta (née Murray) daughter of Rt. Rev. George Murray until her death [8] and had one son. [9]
Thirdly on 5 June 1851, to Augusta Anne [10] (née Champion de Crespigny) daughter of Thomas Champion de Crespigny.
