John "Clipper" Smith(December 12, 1904 to March 18, 1984) was a college football coach at Duquesne, and NC State. From 1931 to 1933, he coached at NC State, where he compiled a 10-12-5 record. From 1936 to 1938, he coached at Duquesne, where he compiled an 18-12 record. He played college football at Notre Dame where he played under legendary coach Knute Rockne. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
