John McMullen was the first bishop of the Diocese of Davenport in the state of Iowa. Bishop McMullen was born on January 8, 1832 in Ballynahinch, Ireland. His parents were James McMullen and Alice Fitzsimmons. He was ordained to the priesthood June 20, 1858 for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He served the Archdiocese as a priest for 25 years before he was consecrated as a bishop by Archbishop Patrick Feehan for the newly created Diocese of Davenport in 1881. In 1882 he founded St. Ambrose College, a seminary and school of commerce, for young men. McMullen Hall is a classroom building at St. Ambrose that was named in his honor. Bishop McMullen died July 4, 1883.
