[edit] Teachings

Gray's books teach that men and women are intrinsically different in their biology and psychology. He writes that harmony between the sexes is achieved by recognizing and accepting these differences rather than trying to erase them. Critics have accused him of over-simplifying human psychology into stereotypes that fail to adequately describe many people.[citation needed] His books however have sold over 40 million copies world-wide and continue to receive international acclaim to this day.[citation needed]

[edit] Credentials

After high school he attended University of St. Thomas (a liberal arts college) and the University of Texas, but did not receive degrees from these institutions. He lived as a Hindu monk for nine years in Switzerland and studied with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He received diplomas called BA and MA in "Creative Intelligence" from the Maharishi European Research University.

John Gray received his PhD in 1982 from Columbia Pacific University. The school closed its doors in 2000. Prior to that date, according to the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education:

“CPU degrees awarded before June 25, 1997 are legally valid. Your degree, and any credential or license you received by virtue of the degree, should not be affected. CPU had legal approval to operate until June 25, 1997, and the degrees it issued before June 25, 1997 are legal.”[1]

In the suit to close the school, Deputy Attorney General Asher Rubin referred to the school as "a diploma mill which has been preying on California consumers for too many years." The suit also called the school a "phony operation" offering "totally worthless [degrees] . . . to enrich its unprincipled promoters."[1]
