[edit] Alternative version of the arms
In the episode "King Death" of Simon Schama's A History of Britain, a painting of John is shown with his arms. The shield is the same as the one in this file (with fewer fleur di lis) with the addition of an inescutcheon of, I assume, Castile and Leon. It appears as follows: Quarterly, 1st & 4th gules a tower or, 2nd & 3rd or a lion rampant gules. The tower could really be a three-towered castle, but it frankly looks more like a chess rook (a/k/a castle). Also, 2 & 4 may actually be argent with yellowing distorting its appearance. With all the wear, spots, and yellowing, it is hard to tell. -Rrius (talk) 08:12, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
