Joe Zane (born 1971) is an American artist. He best known for work that questions his own authenticity and his role as an artist. He often combines painting, sculpture, video, performance and printed material into a confusing array of interdependent works that describe a narrative questioning the truth of what the viewer is seeing. Often dealing with his relationship to art history, some of Zane's best known works include 31 drawings of Conceptual Artists (some of which were displayed at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston) and most recently a series of paintings of famous art forgers. Often filled with humor that betrays the serious nature of the subject matter, Zane is looked at as part of the next generation of artist pranksters. Zane's work has been exhibited in numerous group and one person shows and is the collections of many art institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, the Fogg Museum, Harvard, Cambridge MA. Zane currently lives in Cambridge, MA where he works at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies @ MIT.
