Joanna Chmielewska (born 2 April 1932 in Warsaw) is a famous Polish writer and screenplay author.

Chmielewska studied architecture and worked as a designer. Her first story was published in a newspaper in 1958 and her first novel in 1964. She has two sons and two granddaughters. She loves horse races and gambling: both hobbies have been mentioned extensively in her books.

To date, she has written forty-two novels. Her novels are often described as ironic crime fiction. Most frequently, the protagonist is a woman called Joanna that inherits many characteristics from Chmielewska herself. She also often writes about her friends like Alice (We are all suspected, Everything is red), co-workers (We are all suspected, Wild eggwhite) or family (The Ancestors' wells).

The name 'Joanna Chmielewska' is an alias, her real name is Irena Kühn.
