[edit] Alpin of Strathearn

Welcome to wikipedia. Unfortunately, the source is not reliable. The evidence points in the other direction ... use of de Strathearn points to membership of the family of the mormaers of Strathearn. I can see that the source might be confusing Alpin with Albin. If you have access, please see D. E. R. Watt's entry in the Dictionary of Scottish Graduates for the scholarly information we do have about Alpin, and this will make it clear fully why the peerage article is unreliable. There is no good evidence for the MacGregor family until the 15th century. Some of the sources you are using are — nowadays at least — of low quality. If you are seriously researching this, you should consult Martin MacGregor's phd thesis A political history of the MacGregors before 1571 (1989), available at Edinburgh University Library and presumably by inter-library loan elsewhere. Both Albin and Alpin were bishops, and so almost certainly had no children (and the establishment was still strict enough for another century or so to make bastard siring almost non-existence for bishops). My guess some hack genealogist from yonks ago in the days of poor expectations of verification, saw use of the MacAlpin connection (more likely an attempt to link the family with the Scottish royal family), found an Albin or Alpin and made the link up. It may surprise you to know that that's usually how such research was done. All the best, Deacon of Pndapetzim (Talk) 03:09, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
