| “ | I was a witness to the crash at the Dayton Airshow. Jim was perfoming a signature manouvre called "Skips Revenge" which consisted of two airplanes performing simultanious opposing 1/2 cuban eight's with the addition of a series of snap rolls on the forty five degree down line. From my point of view as a 15 year veteran pilot, Jim appeared to be on a 60 degree downline instead of 45 degrees. This would have effected the angle at which he pulled out by 15 degrees. In other words, he would have thought he was level while acually being 15 degrees low attidude relative to the horizon. One factor that may have put Jim in this situation was the wind. His heading was 240 degrees. The wind was approx. 40 degrees at 15mph. The wind was at his back. This would have an adverse effect on airplane performance in the pull out and could have also effected his attitude. Another factor that must be considered is the smoke from the jet truck that was up wind from the show line and being blown into the flight path, obscuring the ground. We will have to see what the official investigation reveals. To set the record straight, ground responders were on the scene and had the fire out in under 1 min. The Black Hawk helicopter however, took 10 or 15 min to get over to the crash site and was only 1/4 of a mile away. In hind sight it made no difference as Jim was killed instantly on impact before the plane even came to a stop. I was watching the crash and fire crews did not actually arrive on scene until at least 2 or 3 minutes. But as stated by the other witness the impact itself was the death of Jim Leroy. From what i've heard he hit the ground at speeds estimated at 200mph which snapped his spine on contact. I was watching his plane on decent and it seemed to me his plane got off track and his tail shot around farther than expected which makes me wonder if there was a stabilizer problem. Actually, "Skip's Revenge" was NOT the manuver being completed. "Skip's Revenge" has nothing to do with this. The half-cuban 8 was followed by a series of right-rights, a simple tumbling manuver (althought these were loose and tight and may have resembled inside or outside snaps). Smoke and visibility was also NOT an issue. The attitude and recovery point were the issues, thus far. We will wait and see, but may never know exactly what went wrong. [edit] Recent death?
I removed the Recent Death Tag from this gentleman's page more than a week after he died. The tag warns us of "rapidly changing" information. As I indicated in my edit summary, chances are that plenty of time had passed, that it was highly unlikely that anything new was going to be learned about the circumstances of his death. And now, another week has passed (okay, 6 1/2 days), and nothing, absolutely nothing has been added. It was completely predictable. What has happened is that this article has now gotten a moldy appearance, made our encyclopedia look like a yellowing newspaper, and we look like a bunch of 21st century Millerites. I see no purpose at all that was served by placing this tag, and I am mildly resentful that my removal of it was reverted. Though I have been threatened with being blocked for doing so, I shall remove it again, in the interest of creating a more professional encyclopedia. Unschool 21:23, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
