Jikawo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jikawo is one of the eight woredas in the Gambela Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Administrative Zone 3, Jikawo is bordered on the south by the Administrative Zone 2, on the west by the Alwero River which separates it from Akobo, on the north by the Jikawo River which separates it from Sudan, and on the east by the Administrative Zone 1; the Baro River defines Jikawa's boundary with Sudan and part of the boundary with the Oromia Region. Towns in Jicawo include Telut.
The terrain in Jikawo consists of marshes and grasslands; elevations range from 300 to 400 meters above sea level. According to the Atlas of the Ethiopian Rural Economy published by the Central Statistical Agency (CSA), around 10% of the woreda is forest.[1] A notable landmark in Jikawo is Gambela National Park, which occupies an area south of the Baro on the eastern side of the woreda, covering about a third of its area.
The economy of Jikawo is predomantly agricultural. There are no agricultural cooperatives, no documented roads, and little other infrastructure.[2]
Based on figures published by the CSA in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 55,922, of whom 26,782 were males and 29,140 were females; 1,321 or 2.36% of its population are urban dwellers, which is greater than the Zone average of 2%. With an estimated area of 2,192.82 square kilometers, Jikawo has an estimated population density of 25.5 people per square kilometer, which is greater than the Zone average of 14.74.[3] The ethnic composition of this woreda is predominantly Nuer.[4]
