From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello, I'm Jonathan Hoefler, a typeface designer. My chief areas of interest are the history of typography and its associated practices, both formal and philosophical. I'm eager to see how I might contribute to Wikipedia's somewhat uneven coverage of these topics.

I don't have a great deal of time to contribute, but am hopeful that the occasional bit of insight will be useful. I'd therefore appreciate your patience with my inevitable blunders, and would welcome the help of any of Wikipedia's more seasoned sherpas.

Here's more information about my work, including my bio and credentials.

Wikipedia & I: some trivia

  • The Wikipedia logo is set in one of my typefaces, Hoefler Text. The logo doesn't use the proper "small caps" supplied with the font, which is why all letters except W and A appear too light. (Curiously, WIkipedia's own page that defines "small caps" doesn't accurately describe this phenomenon, and actually illustrates the opposite result.)
  • In 2005, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and I were both featured in this issue of Esquire. I missed meeting him at the reception!
