I own a small PR firm - J.H. Mattern Communications - where I run PR campaigns, handle public relations writing, and more for small and online businesses, musicians, and authors.

I'm a freelance writer and Editor on the side of my PR work. I generally publish my writing in larger online business publications. I'm the current Technology Editor for Suite101.

Through my past affiliations with large networks, such as All Info About and The NY Times Company's About.com, I've accumulated a good deal of my own business writing on topics such as consulting, freelancing, marketing, and public relations, which I recently assembled on my own small site network at BizAmmo.com.

Because of my music publicity work over the years, I've branched into several independent projects regarding independent musicians, including an indie music webzine, indie music directory, and blog.

Even when I'm not working, I love to write. I'm finishing up my first novel slowly but surely, and researching a planned book on the German relocation after WWII. I also write music occasionally, although not as often as I'd like, and I dabble in the guitar and am reasonably well-versed in a number of other instruments.

I love anything mechanical, and working with my hands - while my degree is in Public Relations, I spent a good bit of time studying mechanical engineering, and even automotive technology.

I'm an animal lover - I have two cats: one is a stray I took in, because other strays wouldn't let him eat, and the other was blind in one eye as a kitten, so I took her in partly out of pity, and partly because she's just too darn cute. My cats keep me sane and help with the stress of nearly constantly working. I also like dogs, horses, and I've even developed a little bit of affection for my brother's pet snake while he was in town on a college break.

I'm a genealogy buff. I'm extremely passionate about researching my family's history through Germany and Ireland.
