Jessie Murdoch has worked as a Dining Attendant in Claremont High School, East Kilbride since the school opened in 1970 and continues to do so in Calderglen High School now that the South Lanarkshire Schools Modernisation Programme (Phase 1) has been completed.

In Claremont High School, there were two houseblocks: Bute/Crawford and Everest/Fraser (now known as Houseblock Two and One respectively. Jessie worked in the Everest/Fraser cafeteria and has provided over thirty years of loyal service to the school.

At lunch, her duties involve:

  • Managing the queues
  • Enforcing the entry rota
  • Ensuring pupils are wearing correct school uniform
  • Ensuring chairs, and tables, are not blocking the walkways
  • Taking care of any spillages
  • Clearing up the litter and dishes once the cafeteria is closed

However, her work doesn't stop there. During class times, Jessie helps out in the Faculty of Home Economics and Physical Education, nominally in the Department of Home Economics. Here, her duties include:

  • Grating blocks of cheese
  • Cleaning fridges
  • Defrosting freezers
  • Cleaning ovens
  • Looking through the pupils' workbooks and recipe books to get ideas for the cafeterias
  • Tidying the cupboards
  • Helping out in any way she can
