Thompson looked terrible in the two relays at Athens. Does anyone know what her splits were and how they compared to Americans who were left off the finals in her favor?

I should apologize to Jenny Thompson because I assumed she was slower one on 4 x 100 freestyle relay final but actually she was the fastest one among the four swimmer so Thompson may look terrible in 4 x 100 freestyle relay but she did try her best. She is one of the greatest swimmer at all times.

Thompson never would have competed at the expense of someone she knew would perform better. She wasn't her old self in Athens, but she was also well past her prime for a world-class swimmer. When she swam those relays, it was because she was the best we had.

Considering the suspected use of steroids by almost every one of her contemporaries, and the general consensus that Thompson didn't, I'd say she might be the best swimmer who ever lived. user:Jsc1973
