Jeff Mawkes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jeff Mawkes is a former Victorian police officer who was at one point the head of the Victorian riot quad. He quit the post prior to the 2006 G20 summit in Melbourne, citing the reason that he felt the chief commissioner was not taking appropriate precautions against violent protests. He has made statements claiming that protesters goad police into assaulting them in order to make legal claims for damages [1]. On the SBS forum-style television show Insight on the 4th of September 2007 Mr Mawkes was asked if he disagreed with the magistrates who had cleared activist Padraic Gibson of charges on 8 different occasions, he claimed "...magistrates are selected after the issues are over to make very clear and stupid decisions."[2]
