The French version of this page calls him a diplomatic counselor and sherpa as of May 16, 2007, but that does not seem right. Both Le Monde ("structure inspirée de ce qui existe aux Etats-Unis") and The Economist ("American-style national security adviser") treat him as an American-style National Security Advisor.

So does EU Ambassador to the US John Bruton:

"It was a very pleasant surprise for me to learn that President Sarkozy has called upon my friend and colleague Ambassador Jean-David Levitte to serve as his National Security Advisor."

[edit] His exact title as of May 16, 2007

A number of sources repeat the "conseiller diplomatique et sherpa" characterization.

This article repeats that formulation, but also notes he will be the head of a future National Security Council.
