[edit] JDS Uniphase

the company is really called JDS Uniphase yeah. Perhaps someone can update the article to include this. A merger of JDS and Uniphase I believe is the reason for its name, please check. --x1987x 23:38, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

nevermind, it is the other way, JDSU, well anyways someone needs to standardize the name throughout the article. --x1987x 23:41, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

The company is techically JDS Uniphase. The company recently recently adopted JDSU as it's brand name, reflecting common use and the stock symbol.

JDSU is the result of a merger of JDS Fitel and Uniphase Corporations. It should be noted that the 'S' in JDS also includes Josef Stauss, a founder and CEO for many years. Equal credit should be given to Kevin Kalkoven. Kevin was CEO of Uniphase at the time of the merger and remained as CEO and Co-Chairman after the merger. Kevin was instrumental in building the Uniphase portion of the company from the original Uniphase corporation, a relatively small San Jose manufacturer of gas and semiconductor lasers. Uniphase grew through aquisitions of United Technologies Photonics (UTP)located in Bloomfield, Connecticut and Philips Optical Components located in Eindhover, Netherlands;

It should also be noted that JDS Fitel had acquired Optical Coating Laboratories Inc. (OCLI) just before the merger. OCLI remains a signifant part of the corporating and include the Flex division. Flex is a manufacturer of specialty pigments used in security labels and international currencies.

After the merger JDS Uniphase acquired signigicant optical component developers including Epitaxx, a New Jersey developer of photodiodes; E-tek, a San Jose developer of passive and active optical components with operations in Shenzhen, China; and SDLI, a leading developer of semiconductor diode lasers. The E-tek and SDLI acuqistions ranked among the largest corporate acquistions in history at that time with valuations of $16 billion and $40 Billion.

Today, many of the acquistions have been consolidated into the San Jose and Shenzhen, China Operations. The company utilizes significant manufacturing capability of contract manufacturers in Thailand and Malaysia. The origninal San Jose, Ottawa, Santa Rosa and Connecticut operations continue as primary product development centers. Additional Product development centers are located throughout the United States including Ewing, NJ and Melbourne, FL.

The recent acquisitions of Acterna and Agility greatly increase the depth and breadth of JDSU's product lines in the areas of Optical Test Equipment and tunable transponders. The acquisitons present significant growth opportunities for the new JDSU. JDSU contines to be the leader in optical component and systems markets.
