Open since 1915 and nestled in the corner of Fair Oaks Avenue and Mission Street in South Pasadena, the pharmacy has been popular among locals and tourists with its classic edibles and unique collectibles.

In the fountain and lunch-counter area, authentic soda jerks busily dish out "phosphates" (made with flavored syrups, soda waters and a "magic potion" for a slight kick of bitterness), "rickeys" (cherry- and/or lime-flavored sodas with a splash of fruit) and other old-fashioned favorites.

These time-tested fares are still offered today for anyone to enjoy, and judging by their popularity, they're more than worth a try. Familiar items such as malts, milkshakes and sundaes are also available for the more cautious consumer.

First-time visitors say that they are overwhelmed by the quality of their milkshakes, which are made-to-order.

Also served here are lunchtime entrees including burgers, salads, chili and sandwiches. Many of these selections are reminiscent of the mid-century era when shops like the Fair Oaks Pharmacy were pit-stop eateries for travelers along Route 66, which used to be a major cross-country highway that linked Los Angeles and Chicago.

The distinctive beverages and foods at the Fair Oaks Pharmacy have earned the respect of big media organizations, ranging from the Los Angeles Times, to Bon Appetit and Sunset magazine, the Food Network, an the Travel Channel. It also received numerous awards for best soda fountain and also for best pharmacy.

This heirloom collection, which includes heavy chrome stools, marble-topped counters and stained glass cabinetry, tin ceilings, and honeycomb floor tiles, is combined with other antique soda fountain and apothecary accessories.

The timeless atmosphere is not limited to only the atmosphere food. The Fair Oaks Pharmacy also displays and sells unique memorabilia, including products honoring historic pop icons such as Betty Boop, Elvis, Lucille Ball and the Peanuts gang.
