He co-hosts the late weekday edition of SportsCentre alongside Dan O'Toole, bringing viewers a complete summary of the day's sports events, including highlights and post-game reports. Viewers can also occasionally catch Onrait with Jennifer Hedger each morning as the early morning broadcast repeats on a loop until noon the following day.

Onrait, a native of Athabasca, Alberta, joined NHL Network in 2001 as host of both the network's flagship show NHL on the Fly and Molson That's Hockey 2. He also filled in during the summer of 2002 as co-host of various editions of SportsCentre.

Onrait first joined TSN in 1996 as an editorial assistant. He later went on to become sports director at Global TV in Saskatoon and then spent two years as the host of the The Big Breakfast on the A-Channel in Winnipeg.

He is known for his humour on SportsCentre alongside fellow anchor Dan O'Toole.

In 2006, Jay began entertaining visitors to tsn.ca with blogs. Topics have included the Stanley Cup and the NBA. His blogs are usually spiced with references to pop culture. In May, 2007, Jay embarked on a five-city baseball stadium tour with a friend. The trip was later chronicled in a five-part blog, entitled "Balls Across America." Jay ranked the stadiums as follows:

  1. PNC Park (Pittsburgh Pirates)
  2. Camden Yards (Baltimore Orioles)
  3. Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox)
  4. Jacobs Field (Cleveland Indians)
  5. Yankee Stadium (New York Yankees)

Onrait graduated from Ryerson University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in Radio and Television Arts.
