Jaromil Jireš (10 Dec 1935–24 October 2001) was a prominent Czechoslovak New Wave filmmaker. He was best-known as the director of Valerie and her Week of Wonders which was based on a novel by Vítězslav Nezval and released in 1970. It is a surrealist film about the sexual awakening of a young woman presented in a Gothic style. The film features enough female nudity (including that of its 13-year-old lead)to be branded soft-core pornography, which was still considered taboo upon its release.
Another of Jireš' prominent works is The Joke, adapted from a novel by Milan Kundera.
