Talk:Japanese architecture
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I do not mean to be overly critical, in a negative way, but I do believe this article, and Japanese art could use some considerable clean-up.
- The two articles read like copies of one another. Certain phrases, and sometimes entire paragraphs are identical between the two.
- There is too much focus on individual examples, giving great detail of one or two examples per period. Instead, I think the article should give information on overall general trends and advances in architecture, backed up with 5-10 examples. Horyu-ji is not the be-all and end all of Asuka-Nara architecture; what elements connect Horyu-ji to other buildings (temples and non-temples) from the period? What separates it from the styles of other periods? Anyone can walk around Kyoto for a few hours and see a wide variety of architectural styles - and I'm just talking about the temples.
I will see what I can do, with the few sources I have available to me, but I am not an art or architecture student, and I do not know the styles and trends nearly as well as I do the political & cultural history. LordAmeth 16:33, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
I am also insufficiently versed to be able to give a useful contribution, but surely Shinto shrine architecture styles, such as the cross-beams used at Fushimi Inari, represent a style of Japanese architecture that is at least different from that used in the Buddhist temples, and may predate the use of those styles in Japan.

[edit] copyright violation?
is it possible that some parts violate copyright? like "The temples erected for this new sect were built in the mountains, far away from the court and the laity in the capital. The irregular topography of these sites forced Japanese architects to rethink the problems of temple construction, and in so doing to choose more indigenous elements of design" seems to be copied from one to the other.
seems to be the same as the text on http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/tl/japan/heian.html - but i am unable to verify who was first, or who authored what here. maybe its a copy of "japanese art"?
