A Japanese-style strawberry shortcake, unlike the western strawberry shortcake, is made out of sponge cake. Strawberries and whipped cream are sandwiched between two sponge cakes and the whole cake is covered with whipped cream and topped with strawberries. This dessert is very popular in Japan and is a favorite Christmas or birthday cake.
