According to obituary in Bull. AMS written by Oystein Ore, Pierpont was actually a Connecticut-born American who did PhD work in Europe before returning to USA which was not uncommon in the 19th century. ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.15.248.99 (talk) 14:32, August 24, 2007 (UTC)
