Jim Yvorra was a firefighter, fire service educator and author, and an acknowledged expert on Hazardous Materials response. According to the Yvorra Leadership Development scholarship web page, he earned his degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania before moving to Maryland, where much of the work he is recognized for took place. He wrote for Brady Publishing for a number of years before establishing his own specialty publishing company. He was one of the co-founders of the Prince George's county Hazardous Materials Response Team and worked for the University of Maryland's Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute as a fire service instructor.
Jim Yvorra died when struck by a car as he was crossing I-495 (the Washington Beltway). His memory is honored by the Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department (Prince George's County, MD), where he was serving as Deputy Fire Chief at the time of his death. In the firehouse is a display containing his personal protective equipment.
